  1. Universal Design “Universal design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.”

  2. The overall intent of Universal design is to simplify life for all the consumers or users. Creating products, communications, and built in environments more usable and benefit as many people as possible with little or no extra cost. Universal design benefits people of all disabilities, special needs, and ages. Overall Concept

  3. CUD The center for Universal Design This is a national information source including technical assistance and research center that evaluates, develops and promotes Universal design. They study housing , commercial and public facilities, outdoor environments, and products. There mission is to improve these environments and products through design innovation, research education and assistance in design.

  4. Current Projects CUD has developed a new course is being developed at the college of design. It teaches students the concepts of Universal design. It helps them to understand the designers responsibility to the public to create a space that surpasses the minimum building codes taking more responsibility and initiative in design. CUD takes part in design projects. One major construction they are involved with is the New National Children's Museum in Washington DC. They review the designers making sure the environment is promoting equality, and furthering development of global citizens. CUD also works with the Beijing Institute of Technology. They have a five year exchange agreement. BIT will translate and publish a number of Universal design publications. BIT and The college of design will exchange students and faculty.

  5. Fair Housing- Supporting the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1998. Intended to strengthen enforcement of Fair Housing requirements and to better accommodate persons with disabilities. CUD Modifications for safety of use- Helping to create spaces to help those with disabilities or diminishing or lost senses. Dealing with issues of loss or deterioration of Vision, Cognition, Balance Coordination, Strength, Sense of touch or dexterity, smell, hearing.

  7. CUD has a central Focus on North Carolina The center for universal design works closely with the College of design in North Carolina. They promote Universal design in all designs, constructions and manufactured products throughout the university. To do this the CUD collaborates with builders and manufacturers throughout the University to design spaces have innovative design ideas. The center also provides publications, instructional materials, information, referrals and technical assistance to people with disabilities, families and professionals throughout the state as well as the rest of the US. The center staff also constructs seminars and educational activities in every part of the state.

  8. CUD Publications include The Principles of Universal Design, Installing Trench Drains in Curbless Showers, Stepless Entrances for Multifamily Housing, Residential Rehabilitation, Remodeling and Universal design, Accessible multifamily Housing, Universal approach to Product design.

  9. Services Research includes studies done on human factor needs and usability of accessible designed products and environments Conducts design and market research to find contemporary solutions. Design ideals include, concept development, architectural and product evaluations, plan consultations and provides design and marketing assistance for business and industry. Education programs provide courses, workshops and presentations for students, advocates, builders, designers, engineers, service providers and governments agencies.

  10. Funding North Carolina State Fund’s Allocations, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research and Fannie Mae and fees for services and contracts with state agencies.

Awards 2004 National industry Award- worked with R-Anell Homes and won it during the 2004 National Congress and Expo for manufactured and Modular Housing. 2003 Housing North Carolina Award- The city of Gastonia and NC State university College of Design’s Center for Universal Design’s award for excellence in affordable housing. 2003 Triangle Access Award- Given by the Alliance of Disability Advocates. 2001 Gold Metal Winner- HBA Durham and Orange Counties annual Parade of Homes for their Tarr House.
