  1. Reading #1 • “Industrial advances also helped European countries grow more powerful. They developed new weapons and competed aggressively for colonies in Africa and Asia. In 1914 European competition erupted into a four-year war. When this conflict, called World War I, finally ended in 1918, millions were dead.” (Georgia’s Exploring Our World, 2010, p. 262)

  7. Sinking of the Lusitania

  8. The whole story: • The United States and the War: • “At first, the United States stayed out of the war. However, German U-Boats were attacking American ships carrying supplies to Allies. As a result, the United States lost many ships and people [one ship was the Lusitania]. Then in 1917, German secretly tried to persuade Mexico to join the Central Powers [Zimmerman telegram]. When British intelligence broke the news the Americans were very angry. Changes in Russia also affected feelings in the United States. In 1917, a revolution forced the Russian czar to give up power. Americans felt better about fighting for Russia’s new government….On April 2, 1917 President Woodrow Wilson asked the U.S. Congress to declare war on Germany. It did so four days later.” (People, places and changes, 2005, p. 350)”

  9. Russian Revolution • Disney’s Anastasia was loosely based on the story of Czar’s family and lost daughter. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCW5-JV8tT4

  10. What really happened? • Listen to pg. 262-263 in our textbook. • What is it telling us? • Many Russians blamed the Czar for Russia doing poorly in WWI and for the shortage of food. • The people overthrew the Czar and set up a temporary government. • Vladimir Lenin then led a revolt again the temporary government and turned Russia into a communist state with his followers. This made Russia a part of the USSR. A new communist nation. • In communism, there is no competition in the economy. It is a command economy and the government has complete control.
