EL COMPARATIVO • To make a comparison or differentiation between two nouns or adjectives, use: más/menos + noun/adjective + que (more/less ____ than) Por ejemplo: -Hoy hay menos gente que ayer en el teatro. Today there are less people than yesterday in the theater. -El actor es más talentoso que yo. The actor is more talented than I.

  3. EL COMPARATIVO • The adjectives bueno(a), malo(a), viejo(a), and joven have irregular comparative forms. The words más / menos are not used: bueno(a) = mejor (que) better malo(a) = peor (que) worse viejo(a) = mayor (que) older joven = menor (que) younger

  4. EL COMPARATIVO • To compare two similar nouns use: tanto(a)(os)(as) + noun + como (as many/much____as) **Since tanto is an adjective, it should agree with the noun in gender and number. Por ejemplo: -Hoy hay tanto público como ayer en el teatro. Today there is as much public as yesterday in the theater. -Hoy hay tantas personas como ayer en el teatro. Today there are as many people as yesterday in the theater.

  5. EL COMPARATIVO • To compare two similar adjectives, use: tan + adjective + como (as ____ as) Por ejemplo: -El cuadro de Picasso es tan bonito como el cuadro de Velázquez. Picasso’s painting is as pretty as Velázquez’s painting. -La artista es tan talentosa como el pintor. The artist is as talented as the painter.

  6. EL SUPERLATIVO • The superlative is used to say something is the “most” or the “least”. To express a superlative comparison use: el/la/los/las + noun + más/menos + adjective (the most/least adjectivenoun) Por ejemplo: -El concierto más emocionante fue el de ayer. The most emotional concert was the one yesterday. -Para mí, la obra menos divertida es “Algún día”. For me, the least fun work, is “Algún día”.

  7. EL SUPERLATIVO • When mejor and peor are used as superlatives, use: el/la/los/las + mejor(es)/peor(es) + noun (the best/worst ____) Por ejemplo: -Pienso que Alejandra Ruiz es la mejor bailarina. I think that Alejandra Ruiz is the best dancer. -¡Ustedes son los peores cantantes! You all are the worst singers!

  8. EL SUPERLATIVO • De is used after the adjective when the superlative comparison occurs within a group or category: Por ejemplo: -El concierto de ayer fue el más emocionante de todos. The concert yesterday was the most emotional of all.

EJEMPLOS • Shakira is the most talented singer of all. • Shakira es la cantante más talentosa de todos. • I have as many clothes as my sister. • Tengo tanta ropa como mi hermana. • Manuel is more responsible than Julio. • Manuel es más responsable que Julio. • Silvia has less books than you. • Silvia tiene menos libros que tú. • I am older than my brother. • Soy mayor que mi hermano. • Julieta is as nice as Juana. • Julieta es tan simpática como Juana.
