  1. CONSERVATIONOF ENERGY Energy can neither be created nor destroyed;it can only be transformed from one form to another.

  2. If energy is not created or destroyed (only transformed), then where does the energy to… • Walk down the hall… • Ride a roller coaster’s route… • Drive down the road… • Come from???

  4. Cherokee Coal Fired Power Plant Chemical Potential ENERGY http://www.industcards.com/cherokee-co.jpg WORK done on Steam Turbine http://members.shaw.ca/onefishy/engine_room/steam%20turbine%20rotor.02.jpg

  5. Hoover Dam, NV GravitationalPotential ENERGY Las Vegas, NV http://www.bierstall.de/images/Hoover%20Dam%202.jpg WORK done by lights http://www.ap.org/westwire/Vegas.jpg

  6. 1 Liter of water has a mass of 1kg. If the dam allows 20,000 gal/sec (1gal = 3.78L) to flow through, what is the max amount of electrical power this dam’s turbines can put off? 200 m

  7. Gas http://us1.webpublications.com.au/static/images/articles/i10/1066_10mg.jpg WORK doneby Car Chemical Potential ENERGY

  8. If gasoline has 1.32 x 108Joule/gal of potential energy… and the engine is 20% efficient, how much gas will it burn for the 1600kg car to climb a 100 m tall hill? 100 ft

  9. If energy is not created or destroyed (only transformed), then where does it go when… • A car with KE stops? • A person eats food, climbs a mountain, and stops? • A light bulb transforms electrical energy to light/heat then...?

  10. How much PE? How much KE?... In what direction?

  11. Why doesn’t it hit your face? The total energy of a system must be conserved… But energy can be converted to: sound, light, and eventually ALWAYS heat … and essentially is “lost”

  12. "miniLab" Place cup at known distance from ramp (you choose)… using what you already know plus the new energy/work stuff, calculate the height on the ramp you need to release a ball from to land it in the cup! If you succeed you are done… if not, determine the amount of energy lost to friction, air resistance… even sound.
