  1. A-G Requirements(Updated August, 2011) Kathy Cadigan School Counselor x4470 kcadigan@hboilers.com

  2. What they ARE • Curriculum requirements to be admissible to public universities in CA---UC and CSU System • Recommended preparation for college-level work • Best predictor of college graduation • Listed on HBHS UC/CSU approved list in the year taken to count • http://www.ucop.edu/doorways/ • Minimum requirements (Generally require passing with a ‘C’ to count)

  3. What they are NOT One size fits all Exactly the same for both systems Exactly the same for out of state schools FLEXIBLE—Must be met, one way or another Enough to be admitted to highly selective schools Unnecessary for students “just” starting at a community college

  4. Public Policy Institute of CA 40% nationwide to community college—more than half end up in remediation—73% of those never make it to college level classes Only 25% of those who plan to transfer actually do 2010 CA: 30% were successful in obtaining AA degree, certificate, or transfer within six years 2.8 million in 110 CA community colleges yield about 40% of graduates at 32 CSU and UC campuses Open Access being looked at for first time

  5. a: History/Social Science • One yr. US History OR one semester + one semester Government PLUS: • One yr. World from ‘a’ subject area (UC) OR • One yr. a or g subject area for CSU ( Social Psychology, AP Psychology, Economics at HBHS) • Can qualify with AP or SAT 2 exam scores

  6. b: English • 4 years College Prep English • One year of advanced ESL/ELD will count • Must pass EVERY semester with a C • Attending school in another country/language can meet the requirement with TOEFL Testing: SAT 1 Writing score, SAT 2 Literature, AP tests

  7. c: Mathematics • 3 years of math (4 recommended nationwide) • Algebra 1 • Geometry • Algebra 2 Validation: • Second semester of course validates first • Advanced math will validate earlier courses (Trig or Pre-Calculus validates Algebra and Geometry; Algebra 2 or Statistics validate Algebra courses only.) Testing: SAT 2; AP tests

  8. d: Laboratory Science Two years • UC System: requires two lab sciences from the d subject area • Recommends three—Biology, Chemistry and Physics • CSU • Requires one biological and one physical science • Recommends students meet the UC requirement • BUT will accept one year from g subject area ( Earth/NOT Life), Oceanography) • Applies integrated science wherever needed (Oceanography, AP Environmental) • Validation is OK, Chemistry only—CSU ONLY • AP or SAT Subject tests can clear requirement

  9. e: Language Other Than English • 2 years required (UC recommends 3) • Middle school counts • SAME language—Going for proficiency level • ASL is approved for all public schools in CA • ANY higher semester validates all below it • Students do not have to be tri-lingual! • Students who are proficient in another language have alternative ways to meet the requirement (SAT 2, AP’s; university assessment; formal schooling in another language; certification on HS transcript)

  10. f: Visual and Performing Arts • One year long course (taken in sequential order, passed with C’s) • Dance, Drama/Theatre, Music, or Visual Art • Fine art…not PE, Journalism, Technology courses • One semester transferable college class meets full requirement • Not specifically required for HS Graduation---Combined with LOTE and Applied Curriculum • Testing: AP exams

  11. g: College Preparatory Elective • One additional year, any a-g area • Higher level (ie: Ceramics 2; Spanish3—not French 1 in addition to Spanish 1 and 2) • Economics/Government meets this for many students • Can test: AP and SAT 2 Subject tests not used to meet other requirements

  12. Remediation Issues • Passed courses (C or better) can not be repeated to improve grades • UC and CSU will use the best grade in duplicated course in GPA calculation(10-12) • UC will only allow one repeat of course not passed with a C • Senior year: Offers are rescinded; work the summer after senior year is rarely considered • District does not typically accept validation for Academic Recognition Programs

  13. Team Approach to College/Career Ready • Guidance team, website, A-G posters, class presentations, four year plans, parent nights, Career Center, AVID, District College Fair • High expectations/support as needed • ONE caring adult = significant impact • Refer students when you/they have concerns
