  2. Facts About Cows Cows are milked for an average of 3-4 years. Calves are fed milk until they are 8-9 weeks old Cows drink about a bathtub full of water and eat around 40 pounds of food a day. The average cow is 2 years old when she has her first calf Cows have 32 teeth Calves are fed milk until they are 8-9 weeks old A young female cow is called a heifer. Farmers could only milk about 6 cows per hour. Today, farmers use machines to milk more than 100 cows per hour. The average body temperature of a cow is 101.5°F

  3. Life at the Dairy Farm • The dairy farmer usually grows feed for his cows, so he needs a lot of the machinery that a crop farmer needs.  He is also a livestock farmer because he is raising cows for milk.  This means that he needs pastures and barns for  The picture above is of a tractor.  Tractors are one of the most important pieces of machinery that a farmer uses.  They pull spreaders, wagons, and other equipment like the wagon below.   •    We wondered what this big, beautiful storage tank held.  We looked all around.  We posed in front of it.  Then the farmer told us it was full of cow MANURE!  They have a system where the cows go to the bathroom in troughs, or empty channels.  A machine pushes this manure into pipes that take it to this big storage tank.  The farmer will keep this manure until the spring when he will spread it on the fields to make them grow better.

  4. Facts About Bulls A bull is an adult male bovine that can still be a father. Farmers usually keep few bulls around the farm because they are larger and more aggressive than the female cows. One bull can father calves (baby cows) with many different cows. For this reason, serious cattle ranchers take special care to feed their bulls healthy diets.    Male cattle that cannot father calves are called steer, and they are often killed for their meat. Sometimes, they may help to haul things around the farm. Then, they are called oxen. Bulls are important animals in many ancient cultures. In India cows are sacred. They were also important symbols of fertility and creation in Ancient Egypt and Greece.

  5. Sheep • Sheep usually give birth once a year and have 1-3 lambs. They normally live to be about 8 years old, but can sometimes live to be as old as 20. Pregnancy lasts for 147 days. • Sheep don't have top front teeth. • Sheep see in color. The average sheep has a field of vision of 270 degrees. The visual field can be affected by the amount of wool on the face. They have a poor depth perception. For this reason, sheep will avoid shadows or harsh contrasts between light and dark. They will move towards the light. • Sheep have an excellent sense of hearing. They are more sensitive to high frequency noise than people and get scared by loud noises. • When sheep are on their back they will need to be helped, because they can't get up from that position.

  6. Chickens • A mature female chicken is called a hen. A chick is a newly hatched chicken. An immature male chicken is called a cockerel and an immature female chicken a pullet. A chicken is a bird. There are over 150 varieties of domestic chickens. They were domesticated about 8000 years ago. • A chickens' heart beats 280-315 times a minute. A chickens' body temperature runs at 102-103 degrees F. A rooster takes 18-20 breaths a minute, a hen 30-35. • Chickens are not capable of sustained flight. The longest recorded flight of a chicken is thirteen seconds. A chicken can travel up to 9 miles per hour.

  7. Ducks • The Mallard Duck is the most common wild duck in the USA • The current breeding population is estimated to be almost 10 million • Mallards are able to take flight from the water almost vertically. With one strong swoosh of their wings, the duck's body is lifted clear out of the water. They quickly go into full flight. • Mallards can rise "straight up" 30-36 feet if its necessary to clear tree tops. • Once the duck is in flight they can reach speeds of up to 70 feet per second Mallard Ducks usually have the longest migration of any duck, extending from late summer to early winter. They usually begin their migration back to the breeding grounds in March and April. • Female ducks show a strong tendency to breed near the place they were hatched, or near a previous breeding site. • Most male ducks never breed in the same area twice. • Male ducks are known as drakes. • Female ducks are known as hens.

  8. Pigs • A mature pig has 44 teeth. • A pig can run a 7 minute mile. The layer of dried mud protects their skin from the sun. A baby pig, or piglet, weighs about 1.5 kilograms at birth and will double its weight in just 7 days. Pigs have a great sense of smell. Pigs have four toes on each hoof, but only walk on two toes per foot. If available, pigs, who are great swimmers, prefer water to mud.
