  3. Left: East Timor manufactures a great amount of soap to fuel a major part of their economy • Lower-middle income economy • 20% of population unemployed • No patent laws • Half the population is illiterate • Agriculture includes coffee, soybeans, corn, and rice. Economy

Music • Music influenced by Portugal and Indonesia • The independence movement has influenced the modern era of music and native dance in East Timor • Teo Batiste Ximenes is a famous East Timor musician • most widespread form of native folk music was the Iikurai dance • This dance is preformed by women welcoming their men home from war

  9. Staple food is rice • Others include maize, sweet potatoes, cassava, and taro • Cabbage, spinach, beans, and onions • Low productivity in food supply Food

History • First inhabitants are descendants of Australoid and Melaneseian peoples • Portuguese traded with East Timor from the early 16th century • Colonized many times throughout the 16th century • Gained independence from Portugal in 1975 • Invaded by Indonesian forces 9 days after, prompting protests regarding East Timor getting to their own independent state

  11. Art • Art comprises with textiles, handicrafts, dances, and music • Important textile called Tais • BibiBulak makes up a great portion of East Timor art

  12. Currency • Adopted in 2002 • Simplifies foreign exchange between countries • It has raised the cost of living of poor people • The value of the US dollar Is high
