  1. Testing For Alcohol Noadswood Science, 2012

  2. Testing For Alcohol • To be able to describe the tests for alcohol

  3. Drink Driving • Drink driving in the UK accounted for 280 deaths in 2011, with 9,990 injuries… • Although this number has fallen considerably since the late 1970’s, this number is still unacceptably high…

  10. Alcohol Test • It is illegal in the UK to drink and drive – the amount of alcohol in measured using a breathalyser which uses a chemical based test to detect the presence of ethanol on a suspect’s breath… • The original breathalysers used a plastic bag with specific chemicals in there to detect the ethanol • Modern breathalysers use a similar test, but give a digital read-out (though accuracy still isn’t 100%, so suspects are taken to the police station for more accurate tests…)

  11. Alcohol Test • Acidified potassium dichromate solution is orange • When ethanol is added the solution goes green • This simple colour change shows the presence of ethanol

  12. Alcohol Test • Method: - • Suspect asked to blow into the tube • Potassium dichromate crystals are contained in a small chamber, mixed with sulfuric acid • Any ethanol reacts with the potassium dichromate, turning it green – this is then compared with the un-reacted sample • If there is a significant colour change the suspect has failed the test

  13. Poster • Make your own hard impact poster explaining both the dangers of drink driving and how the police will catch you if you do drink and drive (the science behind a breathalyser)…
