  2. Birth place and date • Sarah Vaughan was born in the year 1924 and was raised by her parents in Newark, New Jersey. • New Jersey’s geographic feature of the Delaware River:

  3. Instruments • Sarah Vaughan has played the piano ever since she was seven years old. She sang songs and made popular albums.

  4. Influential Environment • She was surrounded by music as she grew up: her father was an amateur guitarist and her mother was a church vocalist. • She played the piano from the age of seven and at the age of twelve, became an organist and choir soloist at Mount Zion Baptist Church.

  5. Four Facts • Sarah Vaughan entered the Wednesday Night Amateur Contest when she was eighteen years old and won first place by singing the song “Body and Soul.” • After being in Billy Eckstine’s band for a year, she decided to try a solo career and her song “Tenderly,” was on the top of the charts by late 1947. • She won the Grammy for Best jazz Vocalist for her album “Gershwin Live” in 1982 in her late fifties. • Sarah Vaughan passed away at the age of 66 on the year 1990.
