  2. Objectives • Look at what the difference between hardware and software • Look at what technology is in homes at the moment • Introduce the digital divide.

  3. What is ICT? • ICT is not just your computer! • ICT is defined as any form of technology which allows us to send or receive information. • Information can range from a message from your mates to the weather!

  4. How many examples... • Think of as many different technologies in your home which allow you to communicate in small groups. • The group with the most will win some merits!

  5. Some examples • Digital TV (sky or free view) • Mobile phones • Games consoles • Digital telephones • E-Book readers • Sat nav • Wireless internet • Blu-ray players(!)

  6. Hardware • Definition – • Hardware is the physical part of a device. • Hardware on a games console will be • The console itself • The controllers

  7. Software • Definition • Programs which can run on hardware to perform tasks • Software on a games console – • The games • The main menu screen • The web browser • The shopping areas

  9. Task 1 – define • Create a new mind map using “freemind” software • Define the terms • Hardware • Software • This will become your ICT vocabulary! • Also write down some examples to help you remember them!

  10. What can ICT do for YOU!!! • What are the advantages of ICT for you and your family? • Think about all of the things you and your family use technology for. It could be for • Work • School • Entertainment • Fun! • Managing the house hold

  11. Does every one have access to ICT? • Consider this question for • People in the local area • People in the UK • People in Europe • People across the world

  12. Digital divide • ICT is great but not everyone can benefit from it. • The reasons people may have trouble accessing ICT are – • Can not afford it • Do not understand how it works • It is not available to them • Not interested in using it

Scenarios • You are going to be split into small groups to consider some scenarios. • You are to read your scenario and consider • What can you do with the technology you have? • What problems do you think you will face? • Think about the advantages of ICT we have just considered and think how it might effect them. • Choose one person in your group to feed back to the class

  15. Scenarios Scenario - You are the eldest of four brothers living in Zimbabwe, Africa. Your Father and main money earner has not had a job for 5 months. You work as a street vendor to help support your family. You have not been to school for 2 years. What advantages will ICT have for you? What problems does the lack of ICT have for you? Scenario - You live in a council estate with your Mum. Your Mum can find work and money is always tight. You do not have a computer at home but you have access to computers at school. What advantages will ICT have for you? What problems does the lack of ICT have for you? Scenario - Both of your parents are out of work and are struggling with money. Your school has leant you a old computer so you can do your GCSE coursework at home. What advantages will ICT have for you? What problems does the lack of ICT have for you?
