  2. WelcomeMy name is Cynthia Wrenn and I have been the Principal of the ECC for three years. I am from the United States and have a home in Virginia, the Washington, DC areaI have two grown daughters, Kay, an artist in Virginia and Meg, married and a veterinary assistant in GermanyI have been an Elementary (PK – 5) or an ECC principal for over 18 years. Before that I taught teachers how to teach and before that I taught children in elementary to secondary grade levels. I started my career as a writer/researcher for educational televisionI love my job! We have an incredible staff and I love your children. I want each child to enjoy and learn new things every day. Doha isincredible and I look forward to talking to you all.

  5. Ms Janine Frosler I am a South African Have been teaching at EMS for 7 years. I love teaching at the school and especially enjoy working with the little ones. I Previously taught year 1.   6. Ms Marieanne Our teacher-assistant in class Graduated year 2002 in the Philippines. BSAED Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education. Holding a Professional Teachers License- Started working at ems year 2013. Son 7 yr and daughter 5 yrs-

Meetings with Teachers and Administration • Make an appointment • Ensure you state the reason for the visit so that the teacher/administrator can prepare for the discussion • Always begin with the class teacher • If you have an unresolved issue, after that, make an appointment with the Team Leader then, if needed… • Make an appointment with the Principal

  8. Tonight is about General Information • If you want to discuss your child, don’t do it tonight. Please make an appointment • Your child is too important not to be discussed with a proper meeting • Tonight you can make an appointment with the front secretary, if needed

  9. School Hours • Doors open at 6:45 – before this children can be dropped off in the Primary cafeteria. Children will not be allowed inside the ECC building before 6:45. • School begins at 7:00 AM, it is VERY important to arrive before or at this time! • Late slips will be given starting at 7:10. • School ends at 12:00 PM every day. Please pick up your child on time for his or her happiness.

  10. Curriculum We follow an Exploratory Curriculum with learning through play and discovery. Our subjects are integrated and language enriched. • Language Arts – We use several strategies including Lucy Calkins ‘ Reading and Writing Workshop’. Additionally Handwriting Without Tears is also available to help children learn letter formation. • Mathematics – Follows developmentally appropriate standards to create a foundation for the Pearson’s Hands-on Investigations used beginning in Year 1. • Science, Art and Social Studies form the Big Ideas which we use to integrate our explorations and understanding of the world around us. • Arabic and Islamic lessons • Physical Education – Twice a week, standards-based and developed to build our students’ abilities with eye/hand coordination, running, throwing and catching.

The ECC Philosophy At the Early Childhood Centre of the English Modern School of Doha we provide an engaging curriculum, presented in a creative environment, with play and inquiry-based activities building active and excited learners. We want every child to have a positive outlook towards school and a lifelong love for learning. We are also proud of our culturally diverse environment and our focus on children becoming tolerant and caring global citizens. We are partners with our parents to make sure each child is celebrated as a vibrant individual with unique talents, who deserves a loving, safe, caring and nurturing learning environment.

ESLR Awards and Assemblies • Each teacher gives an ESLR Award weekly to a student displaying the characteristics of one of the six ESLRs • Those students’ pictures are posted on the bulletin boards in the front hallway • This year we are beginning assemblies to celebrate our achievements and learning • Parents will be invited to some of them • Watch the Weebly/emails for dates

  20. Field Trips • Important form of learning , planned around the Big Ideas • Letter to parents one week prior to trip • Parents must sign a permission slip • Parents are encouraged to come speak to our class several times a year, themes include culture, jobs and interesting hobbies.

  21. Absences/Tardiness • Important that children attend school for all designated school days. • Continuous absences or being late will not benefit children’s learning experience • Doctor’s certificate required when there is a prolonged illness. • Any child who becomes ill at school, our school nurse will notify parents.

  22. Early Release • Must be a valid reason to be released before the scheduled end of the school day. • Very disruptive to whole class • Forms must be completed and signed by the ECC Principal

School Uniform • Please consult the Handbook for information regarding the school uniform. • Uniform is available from the Al Muftah Store in Abu Hamour ( Close to Medical Commission and Ansar Gallery) • Please help us implement our student uniform by ensuring the children come correctly dressed to school. • On Gym day children should wear the school gym kit.

  24. Eating and Sleeping ! • Very important that the children get to sleep early (7 PM) so that they are awake in class • Breakfast is essential for a good morning • Please make sure to pack filling, healthy snacks • A healthy snack is critical to your child’s wellbeing. • Our school is a nut free school, please remember this when preparing the snack.

  25. Health and Safety • Update current and accurate information with Nurse • Allergies • Medication • Contagious illness • Active case of Pediculosis ( head lice)

  26. Assessment • Beginning of the year baseline assessment • Continuous assessment using the work the children do in class to inform learning. • Observation of the child’s participation in class activities, group activities and individual activities. • Summative assessments at the end of units, can be observations, projects or activities. Progress reports will be issued at the end of each term. Following the first two reports there will be a teacher/parent conferences

  27. Textbooks and Stationary • Children received their stationary order which will remain in class and be distributed as required. • Levelled readers and Writing Books are both used in the classroom. • Arabic and Islamic texts are also used during those lessons

  28. Birthday Celebrations • 2 days advance notice to the teacher. Fill out a form available at the Secretary’s desk, so security will easily let you in the gate • Last 15 minutes of the day. • Cakes should be pre-cut or cup cakes • Siblings or friends should not be taken out of their classes to attend the celebration.

  29. Thank You for Being Here • Please come to all our meetings, trainings and events • We will use our Weebly website and emails to stay in touch and to inform you of everything happening at the EMS ECC. We are being eco-friendly and not sending home paper unless necessary • The Weebly website can be reached by going to the EMS website and it is attached under the ECC. • We want to communicate often • Thank you for sharing your children with us
