    3. Persian Bred in many colors Are the highest price of all cats. Developed in Asia minor, 300 years ago. Know for their Peke face. Know for their gentle temperament.

    4. Maine Coon Oldest native breed to North America Came form the state of Maine Very Rugged cat know as a working cat. One of the largest breeds physically. Males weigh up to 15 lbs. Largest male weighed 40 lbs.

    5. Himalayas(Colorpoint Longhair) Developed from crossing Siamese and long-hair Persian cats during the 1930s Behavior is like combining a Siamese and Persian. Looks resemble both Siamese and Persian. Developed in U.S.

    6. Birman Know as the Sacred Cat of Burma Came from South-east Asia. Developed as a pedigree breed in France. Breed was almost wiped out during World War II. Only 2 left after the war.

    7. Balinese Name comes fro its grace of movement. Breed has nothing to do with the island of Bali. Developed in the U.S. -1940s Developed from long hair Siamese.

    8. Shorthairs(European) Looked down upon by some breeders as not being a real breed. European-developed in Europe more than 2000 years ago.

    9. Shorthairs(American) Came to U.S. on the Mayflower Began as a breed in 1900.

    10. Manx Is a tailless breed. Developed on the Isle of Man. Legend is that its tail was bitten off by a dog on Noahs Ark. Or Noah slammed its tail in the door. It is a roundcat.

    11. Japanese Bobtail Developed in Japan, Korea or China. Favorite color is Calico Came to U.S. in 1969 Legend - it is good luck to own a Japanese Bobtail

    12. Scottish Fold Developed in Scotland in 1961. Has loped ears and face of a puppy Was banned from shows in the 1970s in England. It was thought that the breed would promote ear mites and deafness. Is a loving placid pet.

    13. Abyssinians Developed in Ancient Egypt-Called the Zula. Also know as the Bunny cat. The two world wars almost eliminated the breed. Normally deep brown in color.

    14. Somali Related to the Abyssinians Came to the U.S. from Europe in 1977. Has much longer coat than Abyssinians. They have many bands of color on each hair.

    15. Burmese All modern Burmese trace their ancestry back to a cat called Wong Mau. Came to U.S. from Burma in 1930. Has a short dense glossy coat. There are several colors. They have very outgoing personalities.

    16. Siamese Most recognizable of all breeds Most popular of all breeds. Developed in what is now Bangkok. Seal point is the most popular. Black mask, ears and tail.

    17. Oriental Shorthair Came from Siam Related to Siamese-does not have points. Developed as a modern breed in 1965. Similar to Siamese in behavior.
