  2. Revising and Proofreading the Extended Response • Adding Clarifying Information • Deleting Unrelated Sentences • Correcting Shifts in Tense or Person • Checking for Parallel Sentence Structure

  3. Adding Clarifying Information • Writing must be clear to the audience. • The reader must have enough information • Would more details/examples make the writing clearer? Example: At its next meeting, the school board will consider the proposal. What information must the writer add to clarify this statement? Complete the practice on your notes.

  4. Deleting Unrelated Sentences • In addition to adding information, there are times when you will want to delete information. • Read the paragraph in your notes. Which sentence does not belong? Why does it not belong in the paragraph? • Complete the practice.

  5. Correcting Shifts in Tense or Person • In order to make sure your writing flows, you must avoid shifts in tense and person. • It is important to keep one verb tense throughout your essay. Once you choose present or past tense, stay with it. • Read the sample passage. How does the shift in tense confuse the reader? Correct the verbs to maintain present tense.

  6. Correcting Shifts in Tense or Person • “Person” refers to the point of view of the writer. • Read the sample passage. Highlight the shifts in person. How should it read? • Complete the practice. Checking for Parallel Structure • Parallel sentence structure means having similar parts of a sentence all in the same form. • Parallel structure makes the sentences balanced, creating consistency and smoothness. Not parallel: I enjoy baking cookies, swimming laps, and to hike the woods. Parallel: I enjoy baking cookies, swimming laps, and hiking in the woods. Complete the practice.
