Current Trends • Peer to Peer file sharing • 1 in 10 files on a peer to peer networks are virus’s masquerading as music, photos, videos and software. • Kazaa, Limewire, Napster, BearShare, Gnutella, eDonkey, BitTorrent • Kids often start with simple music downloading, but quickly learn to find porn very easily. VIRUS WARNING!!!

  4. Current Trends • Video Chatting • Very difficult to monitor / record • Know WHO your kids are chatting with • Make sure video chats are done in a PUBLIC space in your home • Consider a recording program if video chatting is allowed Popular with high school sweet hearts!!!

Current Trends • Pornography • 12 Billion per year spent by Americans • 12% of all web sites are pornographic. • 25% of all Google searches, looking for more porn. • First brush with online porn is usually by age 11, usually inadvertently • #1 user group. Boys ages 12-17 • First sexual experience is at age 16 YIKES! Get a filter or a monitoring program!

  16. Parent Tech Tips • Open the conversation • Use news stories, movies and recent events to talk about how your kids can be safe online. Bring up the conversation. Don’t avoid it. • Discuss the decision they and thier friends make and the consequences later in life.
