  1. The Colour-Flavour Conundrum

  2. The experiment: We met a bunch of 2-6 year old kids & asked them to pick up their favorite ice cream out of the 3 options shown in the picture

  3. 1. In the kid universe, everything is colorful On being exposed to several flavours of ice cream “This is pink’’ (Strawberry) “This is yellow’’(Mango) “This is brown’’ (Chocolate) “This is purple’’ (blackberry) Colours define choice “Daddy buys pink ice cream’’

  4. 2. Colors used to decode taste, most kids not acquainted with flavor names Girls like strawberry, boys prefer chocolate “ I like pink color ice-cream” ( 2yr. old) “My ice cream is brown” ( 4 yr. old) Flavor not part of their dictionary “I don’t know name, but it’s pink color”

  5. 3. Few older kids (5+) able to link flavor name & color for their favorite ice creams Brown means chocolate ice cream I like pink ice cream, it’s pink because it has strawberry in it Preferences swayed between ‘Brown’ (chocolate) & ‘Pink’ (strawberry)

  6. 4. Vanilla remains undefined- kids unable to decode flavor or articulate ingredient Q. “What flavour is this?” Blank stare Q. ‘’How does it taste?’’ Blank Stare Q. “Do you know this flavour?” A. “Yellow! No, White!”
