  1. What do you know about DNA?

  2. Agree (A) or Disagree (D)? • DNA is found in all living things • DNA is a small molecule • All DNA molecules are the same • DNA is what makes up genes • The DNA of an organism can be changed • You can live without DNA

  3. Structure of DNA • Polymer made of monomerscalled nucleotides • 2 “backbones”: a sugar and a phosphate • Double helix shape • Nitrogen-containing bases: • A: Adenine • T: Thymine • C: Cytosine • G: Guanine

  4. Bases come in 2 sizes • Purines: A and G • 2 rings • PUGA 2 • Pyrimidines: T and C • 1 ring • A purine always bonds with a pyrimidine • Chargoff’s rule: • A and T • C and G

  5. What Does DNA Do? Stores information • Stays in nucleus • “Cookbook” • DNA is a HUGE molecule (3 BILLION base pairs in humans) • Information is used for making PROTEINS • Proteins regulate everything
