  6. Impact of Biotech Industry • Millions of people consume genetically modified organisms EVERY DAY • Especially Americans • 56% of soybean plantings are genetically engineered • GM crops accounted for 167 million acres of production in 18 countries in 2003 • 60% of acreage was in US

  7. Biotech in NC • NC Biotechnology Center predicts that the industry will contribute more than $25 billion in annual income each year within the next 25 years • Largely due to pharmaceuticals • NC ranks 3rd in the number of Biotech companies (352)
