  1. Mind the Metadata Thomaz Bastiaanssen PhD researcher supervisors: John F Cryan, Marcus Claesson, Ted Dinan

  2. Overview • What is metadata • Why metadata is useful • How to use metadata • Take-home message

  3. What is metadata • We already know what data is! • Great news! • Facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis.

  4. What is metadata • Greek "μετά" • after, beyond, about itself

  5. What is metadata • Greek "μετά" • after, beyond, about itself • Metadata is data about data • (???)

  6. What is metadata • Example: Music

  7. What is metadata • Example: Music • Title, • Artist, • Album, • Year, • #, • Length, • Bit rate

  8. What is metadata • Example: Music • Title, • Artist, • Album, • Year, • #, • Length, • Bit rate • Metadata: • Data about your data

  18. How to use metadata • Designing an experiment and interrogating the data • Metadata allows us to check confounding factors • There will always be an environment • Example: • is there a relation between height vs Hip width in US soldiers

  20. How to use metadata

  21. How to use metadata

  22. How to use metadata

  23. How to use metadata • Making your data avaliable and accessible for others • Metadata forces you to document better • Planning metadata will allow you to usecohorts from other studies • Methodology matters! Comparing Apples and Oranges?: Next Generation Sequencing and Its Impact on Microbiome Analysis (Teagasc & APC)

  24. Take-home message • Metadata is data about your data • Powerful if kept consistent and clear • please keep names consistent! • most algorithms are case sensitive • for 300 samples, sample 1 should be numbered 001, not 1 • in excel, coloured cells and ambiguous comments are rarely suited for processing • Bioinformaticians should be involved from initial experimental design

  25. Thank you! Questions?
