The Gossip… • In Chapter 2 of the story, Candy tells George and Lennie that Curly’s Wife is a “Tart” • A “Tart” by definition is, “A woman considered to be sexually promiscuous” • REALLY!? …Sexually Permiscuous??? How the heck would Candy know that? • After a brief encounter with her in chapter 2, George states, “I bet she’d clear out for 20 bucks.” And goes on to call her a “Bitch” • However, Curly’s wife give no indication of that other than the fact that she is dressed up and friendly

3. The Facts! • The fact of the matter is that there is absolutely NO evidence of Curly’s wife sleeping around with anyone on the ranch • Outside of being friendly to the ranchers, she doesn’t act the slightest bit sexual toward the ranchers. • FURTHERMORE - In her conversation with Lennie, the reader discovers that she is a lonely woman in an abusive relationship

4. TYPICAL GUYS • When a group of guys see a woman dressed the slightest bit proactively, they just assume that she is a slut • And God forbid a girls act friendly toward a guy. She MUST want to sleep with him!!!

5. The Double-Standard • It’s unfair how women can be characterized simply by what they wear or how friendly they want to act. • Women, especially young women, are often unfairly classified because of how a group of sex-crazed, immature idiots want to interpret their actions • It’s WRONG, and people should be more open-minded
