The Torah • פרשת שמות • (ח) וַיָּקָם מֶלֶךְ חָדָשׁ עַל מִצְרָיִם אֲשֶׁר לֹא יָדַע אֶת יוֹסֵף: • (ט) וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל עַמּוֹ הִנֵּה עַם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל רַב וְעָצוּם מִמֶּנּוּ: • (י) הָבָה נִתְחַכְּמָה לוֹ פֶּן יִרְבֶּה וְהָיָה כִּי תִקְרֶאנָה מִלְחָמָה וְנוֹסַף גַּם הוּא עַל שֹׂנְאֵינוּ וְנִלְחַם בָּנוּ וְעָלָה מִן הָאָרֶץ: • (יא) וַיָּשִׂימוּ עָלָיו שָׂרֵי מִסִּים לְמַעַן עַנֹּתוֹ בְּסִבְלֹתָם וַיִּבֶן עָרֵי מִסְכְּנוֹת לְפַרְעֹה אֶת פִּתֹם וְאֶת רַעַמְסֵס:

  3. וַיָּקָם מֶלֶךְ חָדָשׁ עַל מִצְרָיִם אֲשֶׁר לֹא יָדַע אֶת יוֹסֵף: According to חז"ל Thutmose III 1479 – 1425 BCE • רש"י שמות פרק א פסוק ח • (ח) ויקם מלך חדש - רב ושמואל חד אמר חדש ממש. וחד אמר, שנתחדשו גזרותיו: • אשר לא ידע - עשה עצמו כאלו לא ידע:

  4. וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל עַמּוֹ הִנֵּה עַם בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל רַב וְעָצוּם מִמֶּנּוּ According to the Historians Scarab bearing the name of the Hyksos pharaoh Apophis. • This was during the second intermediate period • It was during the Hyksos era where there was an independent Hyksos kingdom • There was also an Egyptian Pharaoh who kicked out the Hyksos in aprox. 1550BCE

  5. וַיִּבֶן עָרֵי מִסְכְּנוֹת לְפַרְעֹה אֶת פִּתֹם וְאֶת רַעַמְסֵס: Not built by Jews The Great Pyramids • Were built 2575-2150 BCE • The Pyramids that remain in Egypt mostly intact were built 1000 years before the Jews were in Egypt • The later Pyramids didn’t hold up to time (built cheaply) but were also finished before the Jews got to Egypt

  6. וַיִּבֶן עָרֵי מִסְכְּנוֹת לְפַרְעֹה אֶת פִּתֹם וְאֶת רַעַמְסֵס: Also not built by Jews The Great Sphinx • Was built aprox. 2550 BCE

  7. וַיִּבֶן עָרֵי מִסְכְּנוֹת לְפַרְעֹה אֶת פִּתֹם וְאֶת רַעַמְסֵס: Statues of Ramsesses II at Karnack Excavations at Tell el-Maskhuta (Pithom)

  8. וַיִּבֶן עָרֵי מִסְכְּנוֹת לְפַרְעֹה אֶת פִּתֹם וְאֶת רַעַמְסֵס: Josephus and Manetho Problems • Identify the Pharaoh of the Exodus as Ramsesses II • He lived with in 100 years of the right date • He was the most massive builder of statues in Egyptian history • Records indicate that there were “Haipiru” slaves that built his temples • Not an exact date match • He conquered the Levant and met the Hittites in Battle at Kadesh which was led to a peace treaty giving Egypt hegemony over Canaan
