  1. Capacity Building Workshop on Survival Analysis Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics Health Services Academy, Islamabad • Preamble • Survival Analysis is a collection of methods used for the analysis of data that involve the time to occurrence of some event. Apart from their extensive use in studies of survival times in clinical and health related studies, these methods have found application in several other fields, including industrial engineering (eg., reliability studies and analyses of equipment failure times), demography (eg.,analyses of time intervals between successive child births), sociology (eg., studies of recidivism, duration of marriages), and labor economics (eg., analysis of spells of unemployment, duration of strikes). • In Pakistan, there is a dearth of studies which utilize survival analysis, although, mortality data is available on several diseases in Pakistan which can be used for such an analysis. In addition, studies on survival can be designed in public and private hospitals as well as in the community to understand the different aspects related to disease mortality and its causes. • The course is developed and will be conducted by an international faculty Dr.Zeleke Worku Asssociate Professor in Biostatistics from South Africa along with the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at the Health Services Academy (HSA) . • Goal • This workshop aims to enable the participants to understand the concept of survival analysis and its methods and impart them with the necessary skills to analyze studies using survival analysis methods. • Objectives: • By the end of the course, the participants should be able to: • Understand survival analysis and its methods • Perform survival analysis on primary as well as secondary data • Target audience: • Clinicians, academicians, social scientists, economists, Public Health researchers and post graduate medical and public Health students in the public and private sector . • Course outline • The survival function • The hazard function • Calculation of survival probabilities • The Kaplan-Meier survival probability curve • Construction of life tables • Comparison of survival probability curves based on the log-rank and Peto’s test The Cox proportional hazards model • Testing the assumption of proportional hazards • Assessment of goodness-of-fit • Cox regression with time varying covariates • Calculation of incidence rate ratios • Pre-requisites for the course • Basic statistical concepts and skills, ability to work with statistical software • Duration of the course • The duration of the course would be 03 working days. • 10 – 12 Sep, 2012 • Deadlines for applications 05 Sep. 2012 • Registration Fee PKR . 1500/- • Course fee, course materials , attendance certificate food and snacks will be provided by HSA in collaboration with USAID. • Course Facilitator • Dr. Zeleke Worku: BSc Hons, MSC, PhD Statistics, Phd Social Services (Associate Professor of Biostatistics University of South Africa) • Since 1998 he has supervised several undergraduate and Masters-level projects in applied statistics and related areas. He has taught various post and undergraduate courses in applied statistics such as the design of experiments, biostatistics and epidemiology, sampling techniques, the analysis of variance, econometric methods, operations research, time series analysis, probability theory and inference, multivariate techniques, stochastic processes, statistical methods and others. • Co – Facilitators • Dr .
