  3. Communication satellite systems • Satellite systems such as Iridium and Globalstar use Low Earth Orbit satellite which move very fast over the sky, which require many gateways or a complicated switch over system between satellites. Globalstar Teledesic Iridium

  4. 178º E Pacific Ocean Region 35700 km Indian Ocean Atlantic Region Ocean Region West 55º W Atlantic Ocean 64º Region East 15.5º W Inmarsat System • Uses Geostationary satellites • Inmarsat uses four geostationary satellites • The satellites are in the same position relative to earth. • They will always be seen in that position.

  5. Spot Beam Fore the land masses and the coast, the spot beam coverage is almost total.

  27. Why the Satellite option? • Gives user access to other GSM encrypted devices when GSM or terrestrial lines are unavailable • No external devices needed - DECT base station is integrated in the WorldCommunicator. The battery in the satellite terminal has over 50 hours standby time and several hours talk time. • Connectivity - one handset, one phone number, one phone book and one crypto key no matter what service you use (GSM, DECT/Terrestrial or DECT/Satellite) • You simply forward your calls to the service you are using

  28. DECT Development • Today: GAP DECT standard only • Will develope and implement the D2 data standard and analogue modem • Keep all current DECT functionality • Ready Q4 2002
