  1. WELCOME TO 1st Grade WITHMRS. CALLAWAY I am so happy to have you and your child be a part of our classroom this year!! I am very excited to be working with you all and honored to be your child’s First Grade Teacher. The following slides will provide you with some background information on myself, highlight key procedures and routines in our classroom, as well as talk about our curriculum/standards and grading system.

  2. WHO IS MRS. CALLAWAY? Hello to all my parents, This will be my 6th year of teaching elementary-aged children. I am certified to teach students in Pre-K thru 5th Grade. This will be my 2nd year at West Chatham Elementary. We have such a great team, this is a great year to be in First Grade! I am originally from Savannah, GA (I grew up in Effingham) and moved to Covington, GA after graduating from Georgia Southern University in 2007, with a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. I do love the snow there, but am so glad to be back at home with the beach and my family/friends.

  3. MY PARENTS AND I AT MY COLLEGE GRADUATION

  4. I am married to Mr. John Callaway. We do not have any children of our own, but we do have nieces and nephews. At home we now have three dogs; a Papillion mix named Gizmo, a German Shepherd mix named Kyle, and a long-haired Dachshund named Gabi. We also have a variety of reptiles, like snakes, lizards and my tortoise. We have quite the full house, or a zoo as my husband sees it!

  5. In my free time, I love to read books, bake, spend time with husband John, family and friends, go hiking, EAT and try out new restaurants. Hey, my husband is a chef and this girl knows how to eat!!  My favorite food is sushi! Yum 

  6. MY SIBLINGS

  7. These are a few of my FAVORITE things… • Food: Sushi • Movie: Finding Nemo • Book: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein • Color: Blue (Tiffany Blue or Turquoise) • Drink: Diet Coke and Starbucks • Season: Fall • Sports Team: Georgia Bulldogs, GO DAWGS!! • Fast Food: Zaxby’s or Taco Bell (such hard choices ) • Animal: Dogs and Penguins • Hobby: Reading and Baking

  8. GRADING and WHAT YOUR CHILD IS LEARNING • Last year, Georgia implemented a new set of standards for Reading/English Language Arts and Math. We will continue to use the Common Core State Standards (CCGPS). We will still use the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) for Science and Social Studies. • ( I have provided a copy of all the standards for you in the folder) 

  9. GRADING and WHAT YOUR CHILD IS LEARNING • This year, your child will be graded using a standard, number-based system. Your child will receive a percentage score on each assignment, and then an average will be given over all the work. We will look at the same set of standards all year. Your child will be working towards mastery of the standards. Remember, students must have a 70% or higher in all Subject Areas to be promoted to 2nd Grade.

  10. SNACK TIME • Parents, we will have snack everyday at 2:15. This is right after we get back from Specials. Each child is responsible for bringing in their own snack. If they do not have one, then they will not have snack that day.

  11. CLASSROOM RULES • We will listen and follow directions. • We will be nice to others. • We will use good manners. • We will raise our hand to talk. • We will talk quietly. • We will take care of our things. • We will keep our hands, feet and objects to ourselves. • We will do our BEST every day.

  12. BEHAVIOR EXPLANATION What Do the Colors Mean? Dear Family, Your child will be coming home with a color for the day. Each color represents the type of behavior that they had that day. Your child will begin each day on green, which shows that they are ready to learn. Throughout the day, their clip may be moved to pink, purple, or blue if they’ve displayed REALLY super behavior during the day! If your child receives a warning for their behavior, their clip will be dropped to yellow. If the behavior continues, they will move their clip to orange, and will receive a consequence chosen by the teacher. If the behavior still continues, your child will move their clip to red, and you will be contacted. Please check to see what color your child has received every day! Thank you for your support! How Did I Do Today? Outstanding! Great Job! Good Day! Ready to Start! Think About It! Teacher’s Choice! Parent Contact!

  13. QUESTIONS ? • If you have any questions that I am unable to answer, please write your question down on the YELLOW sticky note and then place it on the QUESTIONS PARKING LOT (which is in the front of the room on the easel).

  14. I BELIEVE YOUR CHILDREN ARE STARS!! • I hope to learn more about ALL of YOU very soon  • Thank you for coming to our Open House!! • This is going to be a great school year and a fantastic year in First Grade!! 
