  2. Qui = who/which • You use qui not when the word you’re referring back to is the subject of the verb coming after the qui: • L’hommequihabite à côté= The man who lives next door • Le livrequiestsur la table  = The book which is on the table

  3. Que = who/which • Similarly, you use quewhen the word you’re referring back to is the objectof the verbcoming after the que: • L’hommequej’ai vu  = The man (who) I saw • Le livrequej’aiacheté= The book (which) I bought

  4. Attention! • It is important to remember that que is never omitted in French – you cannot say: L’hommej’ai vu or Le livrej’aiacheté.

  5. Dont is the equivalent of the relative pronouns of which or whose • La filledontilest le professeur…   • The girl whose teacher he is ... • Paul, dontj'aiacheté la voiture,…   • Paul, whose car I bought ...

  6. Dont is also used with all expressions introduced by de Even if there is no of in English (like to need): • Avoirbesoin de : Le livredontj’aibesoin…  =The book I remember… • Se souvenir de : La chose dont je me souviens le plus… =The thing I remember the most … • Avoirpeur de : Le chiendont les enfantsontpeur…  =The dog the children are afraid of … • Parler de : L’affairedontnous parlons…  =The matter we’re talking about • Etrefier de , s’occuper de, avoirenvie de, …etc.
