  1. Activities for National FNS/TBM Effort (FY08) • Perform R&D: Theory, Modeling, and Laboratory Experiments for Top Level, Fundamental FNST issues needed for all scenarios • Principal target areas include LM-MHD, Thermofluid, Tritium, Nuclear, Materials (broaden the participation of other US FNS programs) • Fulfill all US obligations and milestones related to TBM for IO and TBWG, e.g. Safety, ITER-Interface, etc • Support DOE with technical and programmatic information necessary to develop US position (e.g. high level Ad-Hoc Group negotiations) • Carry out design, analysis, and other technical activities that potentially have the highest relevance to developing realizable US and international TBM testing strategies Options: (Option A will be the primary focus) • Continue US ITER TBM reference scenario - DCLL as the prominent US TBM concept, and HCCB with submodule-scale supporting role • Define critical DEMO-relevant science and feasibility FNS issues that can be addressed by TBM • Improve TBM design and testing plans • Foster and implement international TBM collaborations • Develop details of effective supporting research role • evaluate possible collaborating parties and concepts • determine if aspects of US DCLL and HCCB can be tested as part of another parties TBM • Develop international TBM common strategy • compare concepts proposed for ITER testing by other parties • evaluate and select the 2 or 3 with greatest potential, develop better scientific testing plan • Evolution and Innovation of FW/Blanket (if extra funding)

  2. Continue US ITER TBM reference scenario • Skeleton design for half-port DCLL in DT phase • Becomes focus of tool development, R&D definition, and analysis effort • Design in flexibility for later modifications and possibly multiple submodules • Research on Key Issues • Disruption analysis • Tritium permeator to low partial pressure – impact of PbLi (impurities, diffusivities…), vacuum side • PbLi Gap impact on local tritium partial pressure • FCI stress, deformation, and dT limits • MHD/FCI conditions and design impacts
