  3. Republic • Power rests with citizens • Headed by consuls • consuls had veto power • checks and balances

  4. Republic • Praetors- elected to help consuls • Advised by senate • In the event of war a dictator may be appointed

  5. Republic • Patricians- member of the Roman landholding, upper-class • 400 BC Plebeians- Roman farmer, merchant, artisan, or trader • Engraving of Roman laws on the 12 tables was prompted by the Plebeians

  6. Family Life • Head of household- oldest male relative • Men held the power • Children mainly educated in home • Women- could own property

  7. Religion • Lares- ancestral spirits • Pax Deorum- Peace of the gods

  8. Expansion • Legions- basic unit of the Roman army • Worked to keep peace • 290 BC- Romans controlled all of Italy • Italy was cut off from the rest of Europe by the Alps
