What is JORUM? • JISC Online Repository for Learning and Teaching Materials • JORUM (Biblical origin meaning a collecting (or drinking!) bowl) • Two strands: • R&D • Set-up (Repository service, ‘IntraLibrary’) • JORUM Repository • Available to all FE and HE institutions from August 2005 • Searchable online library of learning and teaching resources • Resource metadata allows users to search or browse for resources • Free for at least the first three years • JORUM Service • Online service offered by the JISC supported national data centres (EDINA and MIMAS)

Long term maintenance of online resources materials »Investment in e-learning is high, intellectual assets now in digital form » Need to secure the long term future of this investment » E-learning content needs to be retained in a usable state • In November 2003 the JISC committees for Learning and Teaching, Content Services and the Integrated Information Environment agreed that JORUM would have the following roles: • To stand as a national statement of the importance of sharing; • To be a reference model for other repositories being developed in terms of interoperability standards; • To provide a home for publicly funded project outputs that are learning materials, case studies or staff development materials; • To have a preservation function.

Long term ‘home’ for online materials? • Hold learning/teaching materials produced through nationally funded projects • A repository service for institutions where users can share objects • A component of the JISC Information Environment (IE) and interoperable with other services within it • JORUM aims to promotes the sharing, re-use and re-purposing of these resources for the long–term • One component of a distributed network of repositories that may include institutional, project and regional repositories in the future

Long term ‘home’ for online materials? • A base for materials from which the JISC can: • Provide existing content developed over recent years • Store newly developed content, not just JISC-funded • Provide a place where teaching colleagues can meet to share content and discussions about effective materials or teaching strategies • Content/Resources in JORUM: • We have deliberately not prioritised one form of content over another • Flexible/broad definition of learning object or teaching support materials • Not allowing materials with a definitive time-span • Not restricting content on the basis of pedagogical standards

  6. Long term ‘home’ for online materials - Issues • Intellectual Property Rights • A more open deposit system will hopefully emerge in the future E.g. Currently no submissions from individuals • Re-publishing modified content is currently not supported Materials not updated to changing pedagogical needs? • Long term commitment supporting a long term home for online resources • “Embedding e-learning will not happen fast” (DfES - Towards a Unified e-learning Consultation July 2003).

  7. Digital Preservation • JORUM has an R&D strand looking at preservation (also intending to work with the HE Academy) • Key issues: • Rate of change in computing technologies - information can be rendered inaccessible within a decade • Number of stakeholders involved in digital resource lifecycle - who should be responsible for preservation activities and the cost? • IPR - Digital preservation involves rights clearance which may be time-consuming, costly, or in some cases impossible • Digital resources easy to modify - challenges associated with ensuring the integrity, authenticity, and provenance of materials • Developing e-learning materials to appropriate standards and specifications would ease long-term retention and simplify reuse • Digital Preservation therefore requires strategies and procedures to maintain its accessibility and authenticity over time
