What is the World Parks Congress • Held every 10 years since 1962 • The Vth WPC will be held in Durban, South Africa, September 8-17, 2003 • The Congress is THE EVENT for the world’s protected areas and will set the future agenda for these areas • The Patrons of the Event are Queen Noor and Nelson Mandela

Some WPC outputs in development: Opportunities to raise global awareness of Protected Areas and their vital importance for life on earth A program of substance, tackling ‘frontier’ issues for protected areas - protected areas & poverty alleviation; parks & global change; protected areas and ecosystem services A new and improved UN PA List; a report on the ‘State of the Parks’ Policy & global recommendations on protected areas and a vision for protected areas - including The Durban Accord Tools for managers & decision-makers - ‘Managing protected areas in the 21st Century’

Specific input to the CBD on protected areas - focus of COP7 in 2004 A range of initiatives for protected areas in Africa - aimed at increased support for their central role in people’s livelihoods A major long term investment strategy for protected areas • Strategic Dialogues between protected areas and other sectors - tourism, forestry, water supply, mining etc

Program at a glance 8-10 Sept, 03: Opening and 4 symposia: “Context and issues: setting out the challenge” 11-13 Sept: 7 workshop streams: “working together to address the issues” 14-15 Sept: Field trips and short courses linked to the workshop streams: “applications in the field” 16-17 Sept: “Response to the challenges: delivery of results
