  1. Agenda for Today • Mission Countdown – 4 minutes to answer • Nitrogen cycle self-directed notes- 20 min • Class discussion – 5 min • Nitrogen cycle quiz – 10 min • Google pearson nitrogen cycle quiz and click on post quiz (1st or 2nd link) • Email results to simmonsjenniferm@gmail.com

  2. Homework • Mrssimmonsbio.weebly.com • Homework Ecology  watch symbiosis video  write 6 sentence summary • No internet? Research symbiosis in text book and write a 6 sentence summary • Due Monday • Haven’t signed up for remind101? text @ec0d6a4 to phone number (469) 518-2634

  3. KEY CONCEPT: Matter cycles in and out of an ecosystem.

  4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFE9o-c_pKg • Watch this youtube video on the carbon cycle.

  5. The Carbon and Nitrogen Cycles

  6. What is Carbon? • Carbon is an element that is in all living things. • Molecules containing carbon are called Organic.

  7. The Carbon Cycle • Plants take in CO2 because they need carbon and oxygen to use in photosynthesis. • When animals eat plants they use some of • the carbon containing compounds to grow • Some carbon-containing compounds are • used to release energy by respiration.

  8. Carbon Cycle • Keep in mind all living things have carbon in them, so when they die, decomposers help return that carbon to the environment and soil.

  9. Disruptions in carbon cycle • Carbon in the environment is used to make coal, oil, and natural gas (fossil fuels). • Humans burn Fossil fuels in a process called Combustion releases too much CO2 back into the air. • Burning of Fossil fuels causes global warming. • CFC’s deplete the ozone layer

  10. Remainder of class time • Finish carbon cycle webquest • Finished with carbon? Complete your homework.

  11. Write Nitrogen cycle on the top of right side of booklet • Glue in picture directly underneath • Write what is in red

  12. The Nitrogen Cycle • Living organisms need nitrogen to make proteins • The air is 79% nitrogen which is inert (most living things can’t use N2 in gas form) • Nitrogen fixing changes N2 into a useable form to be taken in by plant’s roots • This happens by lightning, nitrogen – fixing bacteria and artificial fertilizers

  13. Nitrogen Cycle • Animals eat the plants and therefore take in nitrogen. • When animals and plants die, decomposers help return the nitrogen to the soil. • Other bacteria then change the nitrogen in the soil back into a gas to be released back into the air.

  14. AIR N2 AIR N2

  15. Disruption in nitrogen cycle • Humans use fertilizers with added nitrogen on their crops • causes nitrate to leach into groundwater • Can deplete oxygen in water and reduce animal populations

  16. On the back answer these questions • 1. Where does carbon come from in an ecosystem? • 2. How have humans intruded on the carbon cycle? • 3. Why is nitrogen important in the environment? • 4. What is nitrogen fixation? • 5. How have humans intruded on the nitrogen cycle?
