  2. Computerese can be confusing! You don’t have to be able to “Speak Like a Geek” to use a computer, but it may be easier to understand if you know some of the basic vocabulary.

  3. Network A network is a series of points or node interconnected by communication paths. Networks can interconnect with other networks and contain subnetworks.

  4. Ethernet The most widely-installed local area network (LAN) technology.The most commonly installed Ethernet systems are called 10BASE-T

  5. Router On the Internet, a router is a device or, in some cases, software in a computer, that determines the next network point to which a packet should be forwarded toward its destination. The router is connected to at least two networks and decides which way to send each information packet based on its current understanding of the state of the networks it is connected to. A router is located at any gateway (where one network meets another), including each Internet point-of-presence. A router is often included as part of a network switch.

  6. Gateway A gateway is a network point that acts as an entrance to another network. This Point is the Gateway

  8. Internet "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers).

  9. The Net has a whole new vocabulary of it’s own!

  10. URL Uniform Resource Locator pronounced YU-AHR-EHL is the address of a file (resource) accessible on the Internet Uniform Resource Locator ALWAYS has a colon and two forward slashes ://

  11. Domain Name System A domain name locates an organization or other entity on the Internet. Sometimes the extension at the end of the domain name reflects the purpose of the organization or entity.

  14. E-Mail E-mail (electronic mail) is the exchange of computer-stored messages by telecommunication. For many Internet users, electronic mail (e-mail) has practically replaced the Postal Service for short written transactions. Electronic mail is the most widely used application on the Net. E-mail can be identified because it ALWAYS has the “at (Shift 2) sign “@”
