  3. Originating in North West India Gypsies move out around 1000 AD and travel North and West across Europe over 500 years

  4. English Romany Gypsies • 1505 first written record of their arrival in England. • 25 years later the first law expelling Gypsies. • And 24 years after that being a Gypsy was punishable by death

  5. Cultural Traditions today • Family for information support, celebrations, death • Strong gender roles (Health – women) • Independence - Fatalistic attitude • Time - freedom • Religion • Language • Horses – dogs /cats • Cleanliness

  7. Findings – Access & GP registration EoE Lifestyle survey found 93% registered (84% had visited GP in last 2 years). This is in line with our Mori findings and most people questioned were happy with the local GP service. Some overuse of A&E reported due to difficulty getting GP appointments. www.midessex.nhs.uk

  8. Findings-Emerging Lifestyle issues • High rates of smoking • High rates of obesity • High numbers with long term ill health • High numbers caring • Less take up of preventative health care • Low levels of fruit and vegetables eaten www.midessex.nhs.uk
