    5. Desiderius Erasmus A Dutch priest who was the most important of the scholars. In 1509 he published a book, The Praise of Folly in which he criticized corrupt clergy. Wanted to get rid of meaningless church rituals. Instead of rituals, he emphasized devotion to God and the teachings of Jesus.

    7. Albrecht Durer The most famous northern artist from Germany. He studied anatomy so he could paint people more realistically. He showed objects in great detail. A lover of nature, he drew a patch of weeds so clearly that todays scientists can identify the species. He is most famous for his prints-art reproduced from an original.

    9. Miguel de Cervantes He was from Spain and wrote Don Quixote He made fun of the romantic tales of the Middle Ages. His main character is an old man who decides to become a knight, a decision that Cervantes mocks (makes fun of).

    11. William Shakespeare He is considered the greatest playwright of all time. His plays are plays are popular around the world. He wrote poems and plays. He wrote 30 comedies, tragedies, and histories.
