  2. TPWS: Overview TPWS is a system designed to reduce the number and consequences of Signal Passed At Danger (SPAD) incidents, and also to reduce the risk of excessive train speed causing an accident.

  3. TPWS: Overview TPWS is designed as an add-on to AWS. The train driver Remains responsible for observing lineside signals & speed restrictions, two additional controls are provided to intervene in high risk situations.

  4. TPWS: Overview • A Train Stop Sensor (TSS), which immediately applies the brakes of a train passing a signal at danger. • An OverSpeed Sensor (OSS), which immediately applies the brakes of a train going too fast towards : A SIGNAL AT DANGER; A SPEED RESTRICTION; A BUFFER STOP

  12. TPWS : OSS OverSpeed Sensor • OSS position based upon speed/gradient • Trigger Loop / Arming Loop placed a distance apart which Corresponds to the “Set Speed” of the sensor in metres per second.

  14. TPWS : Inner & Outer Signals Where a conflict occurs in the full overlap of a signal, that signal is now referred to as an inner signal. The signal in rear now referred to as an outer signal, which is also fitted with a TSS as a minimum The need for an OSS on an outer signal is dependent on whether there is adequate Safe Overrun Distance to the conflict point of the inner signal.

  16. Converging Routes Where a TPWS fitted signal has converging routes in rear, just as with AWS consideration must be given for OSS’ on both routes. However since the requirement for an OSS is based upon an inadequate SOD which itself is derived from an attainable speed The requirement for an OSS on a converging route can be alleviated.
