  2. Major Rivers Chesapeake Bay The Patapsco River is a 39-mile-long river in mid-Maryland which flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay is the largest inlet in the United States. It lies off the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by Maryland and Virginia. The Chesapeake Bay is about 200 miles long, from the Susquehanna River in the north to the Atlantic Ocean in the south. Most Rivers run into the Chesapeake Bay. Another major river that runs into the Chesapeake is the Potomac River. It stretches across parts of four states. One of them includes Maryland. At the mouth of the Potomac, the river spills into the Chesapeake Bay.

  4. Francis Scott Key Fort McHenry At Fort McHenry you can stand upon the ramparts of the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historical Shrine. You can look out to the waters where Francis Scott Key first wrote the lyrics to “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the Battle of Baltimore. You can also visit the original document that eventually became “The Star-Spangled Banner” and visit the home of Mary Pickersgill, the woman who had sewn the 15-star, 15-strip flag that soared over the fort.   5. Oriole Park at Camden Yards Oriole park at Camden Yards is a Major League Baseball ballpark. It is located in Baltimore, Maryland. It is the home field of the Baltimore Orioles. Oriole Park is considered the first of the “retro” MLB ballparks. It was constructed during the 1990’s and early 2000’s and remains as a very highly praised ballpark. The park replaced the Memorial Stadium in 1992. Oriole park is located a few blocks from the Inner Harbor. This ballpark provides tours at Camden Yards from a whole new perspective, which includes visiting the club level suits, the press level, and the Oriole’s dugout.

  6. Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum is located in Baltimore Maryland. It is the former home of American writer Edgar Allan Poe in the 1830’s. His house is now turned into a museum. Edgar Allan Poe’s house is a small modest structure and a typical row home. It was nominated as a National Historic Landmark in 1972. In the house, a number of pieces connected to Poe are displayed which includes glassware and china belonging to John Allan (Poe’s foster father). Some furniture during the time period, although not Poe’s, is also displayed, mainly on the top floor Edgar Allan Poe

  7. Baltimore Museum of Art The Baltimore Museum of Art’s remarkable collection includes 90,000 works of art. This collection includes the largest holding of works by Henri Matisse in the world, as well as masterworks by Pablo Picasso, and Vincent Van Gogh. The BMA is known for an impressive collection of modern art that includes key examples of Abstract Expressionism, Simple Sculptures, and Pop Art. The Museum also claims an internationally well-known collection of prints, drawings, and photographs from the 15th century to the present. Vincent Van Gogh

  8. B&O Railroad Museum The B&O Railroad Museum is a museum that displays historic railroad equipment in Baltimore, Maryland. It’s original name was The Baltimore and Ohio Transportation Museum when it opened on July 4, 1953. It had been named one of the most significant assemblies of railroad treasures in the world and has the biggest collection of the 19th–century locomotives in the U.S. The B&O Railroad Museum is located at the historic location of the B&O Railroad's Mt. Clare Shops. Mt. Clare is believed to be the birthplace of American railroading.

  9. Language The official language of Baltimore, Maryland is English. But throughout Maryland there are many different languages spoken.

  10. Government The Mayor for the city of Baltimore, Maryland is Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. Baltimore is run as a democracy by the mayor and City Council. There are a total of 15 members in the City Council. The City Council is the City’s legislative body, with the power to ratify all orders and resolutions. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake

Economy The port city of Baltimore, is an active urban center fueled by a diverse economy, internationally well-known universities and medical centers, and an excellent collection of historic and cultural resources. Industries include health care and life sciences, finance and banking, and attract highly educated and useful employees. This includes the nation’s highest strength of citizens with advanced degrees.

  12. Miracle on 34thStreet A big holiday celebrated in Baltimore is Christmas. The city comes to life with Christmas decorations, lights, and carolers. There are many events and activities through the month of December. “Miracle on 34th Street” makes people who live in Baltimore think of lots of lights. One block in Hampden puts on a Christmas light display. Neighbors in this block of row houses string Christmas light across 34th Street. The tradition begins on December 11, dusk to midnight.

  13. The Inner Harbor Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is one of the most photographed and visited areas of the city. It is one of the major seaports in the United States. At the Inner Harbor you will find the National Aquarium, Harborplace, Maryland Science Center and a ton of different restaurants.

Fast Facts • The state bird is the Oriole. • The name Baltimore comes from Lord Baltimore, the founder of the colony of Maryland. • The name “Baltimore” means “Town of the Big House”. • During the 1800’s, Baltimore was the second greatest port of entry by immigrants to the United States. • In 1830 the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company built the first railroad station in Baltimore. • Baltimore is the 12th largest city in the United States.
