  3. Curacao • There are 2 explanations of where the name Curacao originated from. The first is from the Portuguese word coracão meaning heart, since Curacao is the center of trade. The second is that Curacao was the name the indigenous people called themselves • Curacao has now become associated to a shade of blue and also to the deep-blue liqeur named Blue Curacao

  4. Capital: Willemstad • Size: 171.4 sq miles • Population: as of 2006 138,000 • Currency: Netherlands Antillean Gulden • The National Anthem is Himno di Kòrsou • Prostitution is legal • Home of the oldest continuously inhabited Jewish community

History • Discovered by Alonso de Ojeda and Amerigo Vespucci in 1499 • Curacao was setteled by the Spanish in 1527 • The original people to inhabit the island were Arawak Amerindians • Spaniards took out the Arawak by infecting them with measels and small pox • In 1634 the Dutch occupied the islandI • In 1662 Curacao became the center for slave trade

History ll • Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries Curacao switched between English, Dutch, and French rule • In 1815 the Dutch took over • In 1863 slavery was abolished • On January 1st 1954 Curacao gained limited self-government from the Netherlands Antilles • On July 1, 2007 Curacao became part of the Kingdom of Netherlands

  8. Government • In 2005 Curacao, along with Saint Martin, voted to be part of the Netherlands, or stay as they were • In 2006, Emily de Jongh-Elhage became the prime minister

  9. People • Religion: Roman Catholic 85 %, Methodist, and seventh-day Adventist • Languages: Papiamentu, Dutch, Spanish, and English

  10. Economy • The economy of Curacao went down after slavery was abolished • Salt mines was the first profitable industry, along with sugarcane • The main industries today are: • Oil refining • Tourism • Financial service
