  2. Key Terms • GUIDe (Gaze-enhanced User Interface Design) • allows a user to perform without a mouse virtually every input function possible when utilizing a mouse • EyePoint • software that works alongside standard eye tracking hardware that allows a user to look at a web link

  3. Key Terms • Algorithm • a precise rule (or set of rules) specifying how to solve some problem  • Scrolling Threshold • the upper 1/3 and lower 1/3 of a GUIDe enabled monitor that when gazed upon causes the browser to scroll either direction.

  5. Problems • The use of the product was designed for people with certain needs and disabilities. • Tracking eye movement is based on a camera picture of the pupil which is not a constant motion. • COST!

  6. Solutions • With practice, just like with the mouse, a skilled user can actually save time with the use of the GUIDe system. • With time all technology gets better. With the algorithm written by Kumar and higher speed and resolution cameras this problem will eventually solve itself. • As the use of the software becomes more commonplace and widely accepted the costs comedown and become much more managable.

  7. The GUIDe Software WHAT IS IT AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

  8. History of GUIDe • GUIDe is being developed by researchers at Stanford University. • This is an example of pull technology. It was developed for use with people who have disabilities. It can help them overcome obstacles of these disabilities, better their life, and quite possibly allow them to be in the work force at a higher competency.

GUIDe • The GUIDe approach to eye tracking solutions is systematic. • It is comprised of hardware and software working simultaneously to perform its tasks. • The Hardware • Infrared camera and a special monitor • The Software • GUIDe is a comprisal of many programs much like Office that helps it to perform its duties.

  11. Pointing and Selecting • EyePoint™ software allows users to perform basic mouse operation by using a combination of gaze and hotkeys. • It reduces / eliminates the dependency on the mouse for most everyday tasks such as surfing the web

  16. Application Switching • EyeExposé™ allows for gaze-based application switching combining the ease of use of an Apple “Exposé-like” application switching with gaze-based selection.

  21. Panning and Scrolling • EyeScroll™ allow for automatic, adaptive scrolling on content being viewed on the screen. • EyeScroll supports multiple scrolling modes depending on the user's preference and reading style.

  22. Security and Utilities • EyePassword™ allows gaze-based password/pin entry. It prevents shoulder surfing and does not generate any keyboard and mouse events making it more difficult to use standard event loggers. • EyeSaver™ turns on the screen saver when a user looks away from the screen and automatically turns off the screensaver when the user looks back at the screen.
