  1. Families of Elements Jefferson Lamar Jones Jr.

  2. Alkali metals(potassium) • T has 1 valence electron • It’s a soft and shiny metal that reacts violently with water. • You can not find it in nature pure

  3. Alkaline Earth metals(calcium) • Calcium has 2 valence electrons • Its less reactive than alkali metals • Calcium is found in sea shells, bones, and teeth.

  4. Transition metals(manganese) • Its less active than the other two groups • They lose electrons to form +ions • They can be stretched, pounded, into different shapes • They play vital roles in the human body

  5. Boron family(boron) • It has 3 valence electrons • Boron is used in many different detergents • It’s a crystal structure> Rhombohedral

  6. Carbon family(carbon) • Carbon is the fourth most abundant element on the earth • They have 2 electrons and it’s a nonmetal • The human body is made up of a lot of carbon

  7. Nitrogen family(nitrogen) • It was discovered by Rutherford in Scottland in 1772 • It is commonly used in ammonia • When heated it directly combines with magnesium

  8. Oxygen family(oxygen) • They are called chalcogens • They can be found in nature in both free and combined states. • It is the most abundant element

  9. Halogen family(halogen) • Halogen means salt former • It has 7 electrons • It exist at all three states and at room temperature

  10. Noble gas(radon) • Radon is radioactive • It’s a indirect decay product of uranium and thorium • About 20,000 lung cancers are caused from radon

  11. Lanthanides(lanthanum) • It’s the first element in the lanthanides • It oxides rapidly when it comes it contact with oxygen • It reacts directly with carbon, nitrogen, boron, selenium, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, and halogens

  12. Actinides(actinium) • Its radioactive • It’s the first non-primordial radioactive element to be isolated • Its 150 times more radioactive than radium • Its found naturally in uranium ores

  13. -Hydrogen- • It has a single electron • It also has a single electron • Its never found naturally in nature and pure it can cause serious burns
