  2. Bellringer 10/8 • What was the Albany Plan of Union? • Why did the French have a good relationship with Native Americans?

  3. Background • France and Britain were fighting the 7 Years War in Europe • Fighting over dominance in Europe– who would be the stronger power? Spain got involved, as well. • Both France and Britain claimed the Ohio River Valley • Both began building forts to claim the region for themselves • French– built Fort Duquesne • British-- George Washington built Fort Necessity • Exchanged gunfire in 1754—beginning of French and Indian War

ALBANY CONFERENCE • In preparation for the war, the British tried to ally with the Iroquois Confederation. • ALBANY CONFERENCE– British colonists met with Iroquois in 1754– • Iroquois refused to ally with British– did agree to remain neutral (THIS GIVES THE BRITISH A HUGE ADVANTAGE) • Created ALBANY PLAN OF UNION (Benjamin Franklin’s idea) • Urged the colonists to unite to defend themselves • Was rejected

  7. Causes of French and Indian War • French and English both claiming colonial territory and wealth. • Local rivalry between British and French colonists.

  8. Course of the War • 1755-War started out poorly for the British– lost their general (Gen. Braddock) during the first attack – he didn’t think Native Americans were a threat to organized British troops– He was wrong. • 1755-1756- Battles between British and French continued– tide turned for the British– British cut off supplies to the French • 1758- British captured Fort Duquesne– renamed it Fort Pitt • 1759– Battle of Quebec– won by British

  9. Consequences • Treaty of Paris, 1763 • French lost the war– lost all colonies in North America • British– got possession of all of New France, plus all of Louisiana except, New Orleans • Spain: Got control of New Orleans– gave Florida to the British in exchange for Cuba and the Philippines
