  2. Charitable Objectives • 1956 - The Objects for which the Institute is established are: • To improve the standard of driving and for the advancement of road safety. • To establish an advanced driving test.

  3. A (very) brief history of the IAM! • Established 1956 • Renowned Advanced Driving and Motorcycling courses and tests • Introduced Cycling Initiative. • 215 volunteer groups across the UK. • c. half a million Advanced tests • Currently c.100,000 members.

  4. So, what do you know of the IAM?

Our Aims • Grow Membership; Aim to appeal to as many road users as possible. • Engage with younger road users. • Increase awareness and media exposure amongst road-using public. • Lobby local and national government in important motoring and road safety issues. • Instigate and publish highly relevant road-safety research reports.

  6. IAM – “Driving Road Safety” Why? • 2008: • 2,538 Fatalities • 26,034 Seriously injured • 230,905 Other injuries Thankfully, there is a decreasing trend...

  8. What does the IAM offer? • Through Advanced Driving & Riding Programmes • (known as the “Skill for Life”) • Several other bespoke on-road assessments • Online assessments • Cycle Training and cycle safety advice

IAM Policy and Research Division (PRD) • Evolved from the AA Motoring Trust and subsequently from the IAM Motoring Trust • Undertake a programme of transport and road safety research • Research Driver/Rider/Transport behaviour • Promote practical, evidence-based policies to improve the safety of all road users • Be an effective advocate for safer roads, safer drivers and safer vehicles • Encourage responsible motoring and through training and education
