  4. The CRITICAL LENS ESSAY The Regents’ Exam writers give you a quote or choice of quotes to read and interpret. Choose a quote which expresses a truth which is conveyed (or contradicted) by several texts which you have read in English class. The quote becomes the “lens” through which you are taking a “critical” look at the texts you have read. Write an essay asserting that the truth in the CRITICAL LENS quote is supported or contradicted by the texts you choose, and explain HOW each text conveys its idea(s) on the topic through particular literary elements (which must be explained/defined). Give examples or “supporting details” which show (“prove to”) your reader the assertion you are making.
