  1. Why Do Map Makers Lie

  2. Contents • Map Makers Lie • Map Makers Don’t Know • To Much Info • Things Have Changed • It Is More Useful To Have A False Map • They Don’t Know The Real Territory • Don’t Want People To Know • Territory Is To Big • Conclusion

  3. Map Makers Lie • All map makers lie. Not one single map in the world is ever 100% correct. A map is most accurate when it comes out / when it is first published. There are different reasons why map makers lie, here are some of them……..

  4. Map Makers Don’t Know The first reason map makers lie is because they don’t know the real territory. Take a look at the map on the left. Guess what country it is. It’s Ireland. An old map of Ireland. It’s missing a whole lot of things like Easkey, Connemara and the big bump on the left hand side of Ireland. If you compare the two maps then you can see the difference between them. Back then people didn’t know exactly what Ireland looked like.

  5. To Much Info The next reason map makers lie is because there is to much info to put on one piece of paper. If you look to the left of the screen you will see a map of Venice. As you can see not every canal is shown on this map because there is to much info to put on the map.

  6. THINGS HAVE CHANGED Another one of the reasons map makers lie is because over the years things have changed. Here is an example… This is an old map of the world. As you can see Australia is not marked on this map, that is because it was not discovered yet. Also look at South America, everything like rivers to villages is marked in. But look at North America its blank. That is because no one has discovered inland of North America yet.

  7. It Is More Useful To Have A False Map They also lie because it is more useful to have a false map. It is more useful because if map makers made 100% true maps then it would be to difficult to read the map and you wouldn’t get anywhere. This is a map of a city in Egypt called Dahab. There are so many streets, side roads and alleys that it is crazy. But the map maker made it easier for us and put enough detail for us tounderstandthe map.

  8. They Don’t Know The Real Territory Map makers don’t know the real territory and therefore can’t give you the true info. This is an old map of Africa. As you can see the curve on the left hand side is way to long. That’s because many years ago people did not know the real territory of Africa.

  9. Don’t Want People To Know Another reason map makers lie is because they don’t want people to know the real territory. Think of a pirate map, they would make a real one for themselves and a fake one for other people to find. Now this one is a fake kids map but… This one is what a real pirate map would look like. The pirate might use this one

  10. Territory Is To Big The final reason map makers lie is because sometimes the territory is to big. Take the Russian Federation for example, its huge. Take a look at this map to the left of the screen, Russia can barely fit on that map, why because the landmass of Russia is to big to fit on that tiny map. So map makers have to make the landmass smaller.

  11. Conclusion • As I have explained in these 11 slides all map makers lie. Map makers don’t always lie deliberately as sometimes they don’t have the correct information to put on the map. They also lie/mislead because the true information is sometimes too much for map readers to understand. My final conclusion is that map makers can be mislead or sometimes they mislead for the better of the map reader but they do not deliberately lie THANK YOU
