A statistical test is a tool that allows you to make quantitative conclusions about a process or set of activities. The goal is to see if there is enough information to "reject" a theory or hypothesis about how the process works. The null hypothesis is the name given to this idea. If we wish to act as if we "think" the null hypothesis is true, not rejecting may be a desirable consequence. Or it could be a disappointing outcome, indicating that we don't yet have enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis and "prove" something.
