  1. Layers of the Earth

  2. Warm Up 1.12.09 If you tried to dig to the center of the Earth what do you think you would find? Would it be solid or liquid? Would it be the same material all the way through?

  3. The Crust • Solid layer • Thinnest Layer • Less than 1% of Earth’s mass • 5-100 km thick • Two types of crust • Continental – the layer of crust under land. • Made up of light substances • Oceanic – the layer of crust under the ocean • Made up of heavy substances. • Oceanic crust is denser than continental crust • Outer most layer of the earth

  4. Mantle • Solid layer that can flow (plasticity) • Thickest Layer • 67% of Earth’s mass • 2,900 km thick • Very hot 870 – 2,2000 C • Too deep to drill • We can’t go down into the Mantle to study it • Oceanic volcanoes allow us to study the mantle • Liquid that flows out of the mantle is called Magma • From the mantle that has been pushed up to the surface, we know that it is made up of large amounts iron and magnesium • Middle Layer of Earth

  5. Core • 33% of Earth’s mass • 6,856 km in diameter • 3,428 km radius • Made up mostly of Iron with some Nickel • Made up of two parts and inner and outer core • Fluid outer core and a solid inner core • Movement of Iron creates magnetic field • Center of Earth

  6. Core • Outer Core • 2,250 km thick • Liquid metal (Fe & Ni) • Very Hot 2,200 – 5, 0000 C • Inner Core • 1,300 km thick • Solid metal (Fe& Ni) • Very, Very Hot 5,0000 C • Very center of the earth • Very dense • Center of Earth

  7. Physical Layers of Earth 5 Physical Layers of Earth • Lithosphere – means Rock sphere • made up of crust and upper mantle. • Divided into tectonic plates. (60-300 km thick) • Asthenosphere – means Weak sphere • soft layer of mantle (like putty) that moves the tectonic plates. (250 km thick) • Mesosphere – means middle sphere • Strong lower part of mantle. Lies between asthenosphere and core. (2,550 km thick)

  8. Physical Layers of Earth con’t • Outer Core • Liquid layer 2,250 km thick • Inner Core • Solid, dense center of Earth • 1,300 km thick • Found about 6,378 km below Earth’s Surface.

  9. Color the Center of the Earth Turn your notes over Get out your colors Color inside of the Earth based on your notes.
