  1. New Rank RequirementsBy: Eric Steen - Scoutmaster, Troop 256

  2. Transitioning: New Scout Boys joining on or after Jan. 1, 2016 MUST use the new requirements.

  3. Transitioning: Working on Scout Scouts who are working on the Scout badge MAYcontinue to work on the existing requirements, but MUST convert to the new requirements upon completion of the Scout badge.

  4. Transitioning: Tenderfoot-1st Class Scouts who are working on Tenderfoot through First Class MAY continue to work on the existing requirements, but MUST convert to the new requirements upon attaining First Class.

  5. Transitioning: Star and Beyond Scouts who have completed First Class MAY complete the rank they are currently working on in the existing requirements, but then MUST convert to the new requirements for subsequent ranks.

  6. Transitioning: 2017 Starting January 1 2017 All Scouts MUST use the new requirements regardless of rank.

  7. Highlights: Scout Rank Scout, previously a badge is now a rank. Contains some requirements that were Tenderfoot and First Class requirements.

  8. Highlights: Camping Number of camping nights has increased: • Tenderfoot: One since joining (no change) • Second Class: Three since joining (+1) • First Class: Six since joining (+2) • Star, Life, & Eagle: No Change

  9. Highlights: Service Hours Number and type of service hours has changed: • Tenderfoot: One hour (+1 hour) • Second Class: Two hours (+1 hour) • First Class: Three hours (+3 hour) • Star: Six hours (No Change) • Life: Six hours: At least 3 hours conservation • Eagle: Project (No Change)

  10. Highlights: Physical Fitness Emphasis on being physically active: • Tenderfoot: • Show improvement walking or running one mile (up from ¼ mile) • Added stretching • Pull-ups and long jump have been dropped • Second Class and First Class: • Be physically active at least 30 minutes each day for five days a week for four weeks. • Star, Life, & Eagle: No Change

  11. Highlights: Duty to God Every rank starting with Tenderfoot now has “Tell how you have done your duty to God …” as part of demonstrating Scout spirit. • The idea is for the Scout to have a self-reflection about belief and reverence. • The troop leader or charter organization beliefs do not establish a standard for the Scout. • A Scout’s declaration that he does not believe in God is grounds to deny rank advancement and could affect his continued membership in the troop.
