  1. Masks in Macbeth

  2. Key Design Words: • Haunted. • Folktale. • Appalachia. • Madness. • Redemption.

  3. Overall Mask Tone: Repetitive, Imaginative, Ethereal.

  4. Overall Mask Look: Visceral, Contained, Unsettling.

  5. The remnants of our choices, of our work, form the masks we wear.

  6. Connected to the land. The conflict between the natural world and human decision.

  7. Artisan. Earthen. Homemade .

  8. Ghostly Faces and Haunted Spaces: Butoh face and mask work as a way to think about how the masks live in our production.

  9. White Face Makeup Every character will wear very soft, almost sheer and effervescent, white face makeup to capture their haunted-like quality; a very clean, simple look. Not too dissimilar from Johnny Depp’s “Dark Shadows” character, but without darkened eyes.

  10. The Witches Neutral, clean, and simple ½ masks. Made of plaster. The texture will speak to the natural, earthen quality to the world the witches live in.

  11. The Warriors Finger face paint applied during performance: marking the ritual of getting ready for war.

  12. The Murderers Black infinity scarves worn as shown below, which then transition into hoods for the murder. A softness and fluidity in texture which then takes on a harsher life-form as they become masks worn during murder.
