“The idea of this remarkable piece of household stuff had so mixed itself with the turns and steps of all his dances, that though he could dance in the chamber excellently well, yet it was only while the trunk was there.” (Locke, 1690, p. 339-340).

  1. “The idea of this remarkable piece of household stuff had so mixed itself with the turns and steps of all his dances, that though he could dance in the chamber excellently well, yet it was only while the trunk was there.” (Locke, 1690, p. 339-340)

  2. “In the box environment, S stood with his head inside a large box, his neck in a foam-rubber-padded U-shaped cutout in the floor of the box, with a curtain to eliminate peripheral stimuli behind him. The room was darkened, and the interior of the box lighted with flashing red and green lights. The inner dimensions of the box were about 3 ft. x 3 ft. at the end where the subjects head was, and tapered to about 1 ft. x 2 ft. approximately 3 ½ ft. in front of S’s head. None of the walls were parallel. The inside of the box was painted white, with green and black lines added, converging to a false vanishing point which did not coincide with the perspective of the walls. Some of the painted lines were ‘connected’ to black strings hung across the interior of the box. Half of one wall ws covered by furry red patches made of a nylon bathmat. After constructing the box and using it, it seemed to Es that a great deal of its effect came from the changing illumination; a red 40-w. bulb flashed at a rate of approximately 80/min, while a green 40-w. bulb flashed at approximately 18/min. These were the only lights in the box. The Ss generally agreed that the box was highly unusual, and on two occasions Ss had to be excused because of nausea.” (Dallett & Wilcox, 1968, p. 475-476).

  3. “Jonah may be regarded as the core or primary personality, inasmuch as it was he who was ‘out there,’ interacting with the world most of the time. Occasionally, however, Jonah would surrender control over consciousness and behavior to one of three alternate or secondary personalities, each of whom embodied different emotions, experiences, and traits. These three secondary personalities were (a) King Young: a charming, gregarious, pleasure-oriented ladies’ man who could not take no for an answer, (b) Sammy: a rational, purely intellectual individual who enjoyed twisting words, engaging in debates, and accumulating knowledge for knowledge’s sake, and (c) Usoffa Abdulla: alias Son of Omega, a sullen, sulfurous, physically powerful figure whose duty was to protect Jonah from danger.” (Eich, 1989, p. 339-340)

  7. “S. had often complained that he had a poor memory for faces: ‘They’re so changeable,’ he had said. ‘A person’s expression depends on his mood and on the circumstances under which you happen to meet him. People’s faces are constantly changing; it’s the different shades of expression that confuse me and make it hard to remember faces.” (Luria, 1968, p. 64)
