History Continued • Ancient Greece: grew grapes, olives and cereals • During reign of Alexander the Great: introduced cotton and sugar beets • 13th-10th Centuries: invaded and occupied • 16th – 17th Centuries: new crops introduced after the discovery of the Americas (tobacco, tomato, pepper, etc) • After World War II: achieved self-sufficiency in food production • 1981: Greece enters E.E.C. and tries to modernize its rural economy

Cooperative Movement • 7,200 cooperatives in present Greece • Panhellenic Confederation of Unions of Agricultural Cooperatives, a non profit organization founded in 1935, • Represents 746.812 Greek Farmers • 6.350 Agricultural Cooperatives (1st level organizations) • 114 Unions of Agricultural Cooperatives (2nd level organizations). • European Level: Copa-Cogeca

Important Calculations • 1 Liter = .2642 (.25) Gallons • 1 Hectare = 2.471 Acres • 1 Bushel = 56 Pounds (corn) • 1 Metric Ton = 2200 pounds • 1 Kilo = 2.2 pounds So: If we had a corn crop of 5.81 Metric tons/hectare, what is that in bushels/acre? 5.81*2200 = 12,782 pounds 12,782 pounds /56 pounds per bushel = 228.25 bushels/hectare 228.25 bushels / 2.471 = 92.371bushels/acre
