  1. Skype v5.3 Audio and Video Calling to other Skype Users

  2. Today we’re going to do several things: • Add a new Contact to our Skype Contact List • Place a Free Audio Call to one of your Skype Contacts • Add additional contacts to an existing audio call. • Connect to one of your Skype Contacts utilizing a Skype Video Call.

  3. Add a new Contact to our Skype Contact List

  4. First let’s add a new person to our Skype contact list.Click on the “Add a contact” button in the lower left area of your Skype window. (As shown in the image below)

  5. When the “Add a contact” window opens up, you have several choices of how you want to search for a contact to add. Your more exact options for searching are to search for someone by their: • Email address • Full Name • Their Skype Name

  6. After you type in the Skype name, Full Name or email address, Skype will search for the user that you are searching for and display search results. When you see the result you are searching for click the green “+ ADD” button below.

  7. After you click the “+ ADD” button, Skype will present you with the “Send Contact Request” window. This will allow you to send a customized note/short letter to the user asking them to add you to their Contact List. When you have finished your note, click the “Send request” button.

  8. This screen is not relevant for what we are doing, so please just click the X in the top right corner to close this window.

  9. Once the user approves your contact request, you will see their on your Contact List on the vertical column on the left-hand side of the Skype window. By clicking on the user’s name, you will select them, and their name will be highlighted blue.

  10. Place a Free Audio Call to one of your Skype Contacts.

  11. In this text chat, Nancy tells Ned that she’s going to call him on Skype for an Audio Conversation. To initiate this audio call, Nancy will click on the green “Call” button at the top of the chat window.

  12. After Nancy clicked the “Call” button, her Skype begins dialing Ned’s computer.

  13. On Ned’s computer, he receives an alert for him to answer an incoming call from Nancy. To answer this call you just have to click the green “Answer” button.

  14. After the call is answered, you will see the connected call window with the user’s name and icon on your screen. Once the call is connected you can start talking to the other party, similar to a phone conversation.

  15. Add additional contacts to an existing audio call.

  16. You can also invite other people from your Contact List to join an existing audio too. Just click the “Add people” at the bottom of the middle of the window of your current audio call. After you select the name(s) that you want to invite, just click the green “Add to call” button under the list of names.

  17. After you select the name(s) that you want to invite, just click the green “Add to call” button under the list of names.

  18. After you hit “Add to call” the third user can answer the call, and then they also will be added to the audio call with the original callers.

  19. You also have the ability to send text message to the callers involved in your audio call. You can click on the little speech bubble towards the right side of the bottom of the call window. (See the image below.)

  20. After clicking the chat icon to start adding text messages to your audio call users, Skype will split the audio call window and add an open a text chat area of the screen. Whatever message you type here will be shown to all the users involved in the audio call.

  21. When you are finished with your audio call, you can simply hit the red icon/“End call” button towards the bottom left of the call window.

  22. Connect to one of your Skype Contacts utilizing a Skype Video Call.

  23. Now let’s make a video call to one of our Contacts. Click the name of your contact on your contact list, so their name is highlighted blue, then, if you have a webcam installed on your computer, you will be able to click on the green “Video Call” button. This will initiate an incoming call on the chosen contact’s computer.

  24. When the person you are calling answers the video call, they will see your video image in their Skype window.

  25. Things to remember about Skype Video Calls: • In a video call, you will have live video and audio from the person calling you. It will function just like the previously described “audio call”, only this will include video too. • You MUST have a webcam installed on your computer in order to initiate video calls. • You can still receive a video call from someone that has a webcam on their computer. • You will be able to see the other person’s video and hear their audio. • If you do not have a webcam, the person calling you for a video call will only be able to hear your audio; they will not see any video.

  26. Similar to an audio call, you can also send text messages to a video user as well.

  27. Here is what a video call and a text chat looks like.

  28. When you are finished with your audio call, you can simply hit the red icon/“End call” button towards the bottom left of the call window.
