  1. Automotive Noise Emission of Motor Vehicles Prepared for the GRB-meeting on 21.02.2001 TÜV Süddeutschland Group 1

  2. Automotive Noise Emission in different Gears Examples: • Small car (1,2 l, 40 kW, 73 dB(A)), • Medium sized car (1,8 l, 110 kW, 71 dB(A)), • High performance car (4 l, 210 kW, 70 dB(A)), • Diesel car (2,2 l, 92 kW, 71 dB(A)), • Old car (1,3 l, 64 kW, 80 dB(A), 1972), • Light duty vehicle (2,9 l, 75 kW, 75 dB(A)) TÜV Süddeutschland Group 2

  3. Automotive Noise Emission in different Gears TÜV Süddeutschland Group 3

  4. Automotive Noise Emission in different Gears TÜV Süddeutschland Group 4

  5. Automotive Noise Emission in different Gears TÜV Süddeutschland Group 5

  6. Automotive Noise Emission in different Gears TÜV Süddeutschland Group 6

  7. Automotive Noise Emission in different Gears TÜV Süddeutschland Group 7

  8. Automotive Tyre/Road Noise Influence • Average tyre noise influence on overall result: • ECE R 51: 35%, • Gov-D prop: 45%, • OICA prop: 64%, • Gov-NL prop: 61% TÜV Süddeutschland Group 8

  9. Automotive Questions • Which noise source shall be addressed ? • Mainly Propulsion Noise ? • Propulsion and tyre/road noise ? • Is it meaningful to include a constant speed test if the result is dominated by tyre/road noise ? • Is it meaningful to include tyre/road noise if the manufacturer can choose the test tyre ? • Wouldn‘t it be better to reduce the tyre contribution as much as possible ? TÜV Süddeutschland Group 9

  10. Automotive Noise Emission in Real Traffic TÜV Süddeutschland Group 10

  11. Automotive Noise Emission in Real Traffic TÜV Süddeutschland Group 11

  12. Automotive Lmax versus Leq TÜV Süddeutschland Group 12

  13. Automotive Conclusions/Remarks • ECE R 51 values are poorly correlated with Leq • Gearshift behaviour is engine speed related rather than vehicle speed related • Objective of amendment of ECE R 51 needs to be clarified TÜV Süddeutschland Group 13

  14. Automotive Vehicle Speed Distributions TÜV Süddeutschland Group 14

  15. Automotive Target Accelerations TÜV Süddeutschland Group 15

  16. Automotive ECE R 51 OICA, max. Engine Speed TÜV Süddeutschland Group 16

  17. Automotive Questions • What type of roads shall be addressed ? • Residential streets ? • Urban main streets ? • What vehicle speed range shall be used ? • How shall the target acceleration be defined ? • What is the limit to avoid suboptimisation of tyres ? TÜV Süddeutschland Group 17

  18. Automotive Questions • A partial load test would be representative but would this be suitable to test the quality of silencers ? • Is a fixed vehicle speed suitable for the acceleration test since the gearshift behaviour is engine speed related rather than vehicle speed related ? • What is the final target ? • A quiet vehicle ? • Are additional specifications necessary to avoid cycle bypassing ? TÜV Süddeutschland Group 18
