  3. SLM VSC - moving forward • National review – RFP release - Summer 2006 • Early Winter 2006 Presentation - State Board • Integration of SLM VSC with other curricula areas (matrices to be created) • Link to the work of TL8 committees • Interactive site on web

K-16 Sub-committee on Information Literacy and Ethical Use- Maryland K-16 Partnership for Teaching and Learning • Statewide dialogue and development of policies that demonstrate the: • importance of academic integrity and ethical use • destructive impact of plagiarism on student achievement • significance of library information literacy and its correlation to student success • importance of critical thinking skills when dealing with the use of information • Work Completed to date - • Development of draft white paper establishing an “action agenda” • Draft recommendations: • Facilitate a baseline data study • Establish intensive educator and faculty awareness and professional development • Establish minimum model statements on bibliographic construction and citation protocols • Promote Maryland public awareness campaign • Establish policy requirements • Establish minimum expectations for students

NCSA – Help Keep Kids Connected and Protected - Campaign • Work begun with national groups Fall 2005 (including Federal Trade Commission, Homeland Security) • Create a clearinghouse for parents, teachers, and students to come for information and tips on staying protected while using the internet. • First campaign “Social Networking Sites: Today’s Hippest Meeting Place” • May 1 Release – includes radio PSA’s, tip/discussion guides for students, parents and teachers, web banners for use by multiple sites.

  6. Advocacy/Legislative Updates • Feb. 1, 2006 - Maryland Library Day, State Legislative Reception and Visits • ALA National Library Legislative Day • MLA Distinguished Service awards to Senate President Mike Miller and Delegate John Leopold (AA Co. Dist. 31)

Ed Tech Program Status • Advocacy & Funding Update • Funded Partnerships for 2005-06 (Year 4) 4TL8 (continuing), MDK12 (continuing), Shore Readers!, Algebra eLearning Collaborative • New partnership(s) on evaluation accepted for 2006-2007 • Ed tech program again cut from President’s budget for MD 2007-08

Maryland Plan for Technology in Education • Final stages of draft • To be sent out to SLMA and other stakeholders for comment soon • Scheduled for the State Board this fall along with the technology survey results • Work begun on developing a process and timeline for review and revision of the Maryland Technology Survey

Standards for SLM Programs in Maryland /COMAR Revision • Formation of Workgroups by Standard • Proposed timeline • May 16, 2006 – School Library Media Briefing - Form Workgroups by Standard (Face-to-Face Meeting) • May - September 2006 - Virtual committee work and at least one face-to-face meeting of each committee by standard area • July 1 – Submit RFP for national review of School Library Media Voluntary State Curriculum. • September 2006 – Draft program standards recommendations returned to School Library Media Advisory for feedback from School Library Media Workgroups (including any suggested changes to COMAR, data collection process and process for local program evaluation) • September/October 2006 – Finalize School Library Media Voluntary State Curriculum • October/November 2006 - Meeting of the School Library Media Advisory to finalize revisions to program standards and COMAR • November 2006 – Complete the alignment of the School Library Media Annual Report to “revised” standards • December 2006/January 2007 - Presentation of COMAR revision and Program Standards for State Board “approval.” (TBD) • SLM Annual Report • What kind of information do we want to gather? • Program reviews • Protocols, Timelines
